Being a fruitarian isn’t easy. You need access to high quality fruit, a place to store it, time to eat it and a supportive environment that allows you to eat the way you want to it.
When winter comes around, the challenges increase. For the most part, fruit is cooling. This means that most fruits will cool down your body after you consume them. Think of watermelons, cucumbers, apples and tomatoes. These are all fruits that you would reach for on a hot summer day but in winter they may not be appealing.
How to be a Fruitarian in Winter?
Cooling Fruits vs. Warming Fruits
To understand how to be a fruitarian in winter you need to know a few essential things. First of all you need to understand that some fruits are more cooling than others and that there are fruits that can actually have a heating effect in your body.
The most cooling fruits include apples, bananas, grapefruit, kiwis, lemons, oranges, pear, persimmons, strawberries and watermelon. Less cooling/ warming fruits include cherries, dates, coconut water, guavas, mangos, nectarines, peaches and raspberries. Neutral fruits include apricots, figs, goji berries, grapes, olives, papayas, pineapples and plums.
The advice here is obvious. Eat more warming foods and less cooling foods and you will have an easier time following a fruitarian diet during winter.
17 More Tips to be a Fruitarian in Winter
There are some extra tricks you can perform to handle fruitarianism during winter. These are my top 16 pieces of advice:
Tip #1: If you are making juices, add up some ginger to them to warm up your body. Ginger usually goes well with apples but you can have it with other fruits as well. Experiment and find out what you like best.
Tip #2: Exercises to get your blood moving. This is especially important in the morning and in the evening before bed. You can do a medium to intense workout in the morning and that will warm you up right away. On the evening you can do a medium to light workout which will also serve to keep you warm.
Tip #3: Dress with layers. This is a no brainer, if you want to be warm you have to stay warm. Do not think that a fruitarian diet makes you invincible. Keep your socks on, wear worm shoes, put on long thick pants and have a jacket on whenever it is chilly. If you go outside, put a hat or hoodie on to contain body heat.
Tip #4: Don’t eat fruit from the fridge. If you have something on the fridge, place it outside on the counter and let it get to room temperature. If you eat fruit straight from the fridge it will surely cool you down.
Tip #5: Eat as much as possible. During winter time, you want to pack in as many calories as you can. I am not saying you should over eat, but you certainly don’t want to be hungry.
Tip #6: Pack on the fat. Along with eating many calories you also want to include more fat on your diet. This can come in the form of avocados and olives. Eating fat will help you gain fat which in turn will add more insulation to your body so that it is easy to retain body heat.
Tip #7: Spend as much time as possible in the sun. It will naturally warm you up and give you energy throughout the day.
Tip #8: Drink some herbal tea, especially in the morning and at night. It will be a good way to warm up your body and help you feel cozy.
Tip #9: Hang around by the fire. If you have the chance, spend some time around a bonfire or a fireplace. It will warm you up and fire up your spirit.
Tip #10: Don’t be stingy with your heating system. A lot of people spend too much time feeling cold at home because they don’t want to spend money on their heating system. I think it is great to save money and save energy, we should all focus on that. That being said, there is a limit for what you can tolerate and some homes require some amount of heating on during the winter.
Tip #11: Make sure to stay warm at night by putting on lots of blankets on top of your bed.
Tip #12: Get a cuddle buddy for those cold nights in winter. Having someone next to you will help both of you stay warm. If you don’t have a partner this may serve you as motivation. =D
Tip #13: Remember that just because a fruit is cooling it doesn’t mean that a fruitarian won’t eat it during winter time. One easy trick you can do to allow greater variety of fruit intake during winter is to have your cooling fruit during the warmest parts of the day, when the sun is high in the sky. That will help you balance things out and stay warm with cooling fruits.
Tip #14: Another important thing to remember is that some fruitarian diets allow for vegetables as well. Not all fruitarians eat 100% fruit. If you want to eat vegetables, you have two options, raw and cooked. Cooked foods will clearly be more warming than raw foods. Vegetables also have their own unique cooling vs warming qualities so be sure to looking into that as well.
Tip #15: The last thing to remember is that vitamin C is an excellent resource to prevent and fight the common cold. Now don’t get this wrong, colds are often caused by a detox reaction and we do not want to repress the body’s natural way of ridding itself of toxins. Most people who are used to cooked food and animal products tend to run on a highly acidic body which is naturally warmer. When winter comes around, the cooling essence of the season helps break down mucus and cleanse the body, this is a good thing. Vitamin C from oranges, kiwis and lemons will help you support your body’s natural detoxification process.
Tip #16: If all else fails you may have to move to the tropics. Being a fruitarian there is much easier and you won’t have any issues during winter time. =D
