I am sitting by my boarding gate at Denver International Airport waiting for my flight to Hawaii where I will be spending 6 weeks at a raw vegan community called Kanekiki Farm. I decided to do this trip a month ago after realizing it was a necessary step to becoming a fruitarian bodybuilder. This is my dream and I am flying with it. Pun intended 😉
The Ups and Downs of Fruitarianism
Three months ago I began my journey to become a fruitarian, trying to eat only fruit and nothing else. The results, overall, have been quite positive. I am sure I will love the fruitarian diet even more once I am enjoying fresh, raw, ripe, juicy, organic, local fruit in Hawaii. =D
Getting to this point hasn’t been easy. Switching to the fruitarian diet is a journey on its own. The transition has been complicated and it required many hours of study and lots of trial and error.
During the past three months I have learned the benefits of the fruitarian diet as well as the risks and dangers of not following it correctly. I learned what to eat, when and how, I learned which fruits combine well with each other and which don’t and I learned the effects that different fruits have in my body, mind, heart and spirit.
I have also learned about the art of detoxification, its simplicity and complications. I have learned that switching to a fruitarian diet can’t happen overnight and that the road to heaven is paved with roses full of thorns.
Early Struggles to Become an Athlete
I am becoming a fruitarian bodybuilder, but I am certainly not where I wish to be. My physique isn’t impressive and my athletic performance and fitness levels are quite lacking to say the least.
As a young child I wasn’t interested in sports. I was always the last kid to be picked for teams and my classmates made fun of me saying “I didn’t know how to run”. It was embarrassing, of course.
When I turned 11 my mother placed me on a basketball team and things began to change for me. I started lifting weights and improving my stride, two years later I was the best player on our team.
I went on to play soccer and became captain of the track team in high school. I even ran with our college team during my freshman year. Despite these later successes, I always felt that I had much room for growth.
Shifting the Focus to Health and Wellness
Fitness, sports and performance played a huge role during my teenage years and early twenties. Basketball has always been my favorite sport. Running, cycling and swimming were also some of my areas of focus during college. Bodybuilding, on the other hand, has always escaped me and even thought I was able to gain muscle sporadically I never took a consistent approach to it.
Over the past five years I have gone through a period of self-renaissance. This phase was triggered by an unexpected awakening to the subtle paradoxes and mysteries of life and my own existence. I began to practice meditation and started to attend multiple yoga classes. I cleaned up my diet and took alcohol out of my weekly routine.
I also began to swallow philosophy, spirituality and self-help books. I looked into the writings of ancient philosophers like Plato and Socrates, I nibbled through Nietzsche and tried to understand Kant’s “Critique of Pure Reason”. I read some of the great ancient Hindu texts including The Upanishads, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and The Bhagavad Gita. Along my reading I included contemporaries such as Eckhart Tolle, Don Miguel Ruiz and one of my favorites, Alan Watts.
My diet also went through a dramatic change. I traded canned and processed foods for whole foods and reduced my consumption of meat and animal products. I began to drink more fruit and vegetable juices and salads became part of my daily routine. As a result, my waistline became smaller, my mind clearer, my heart bigger and waves of insight became a normal occurrence.
Discovering the Fruitarian Diet
As the years rolled by my diet continued to evolve. I went from being a ferocious meat eater to a vegetarian yogi and later on I became a strict vegan.
A year ago I learned about the raw vegan diet, tried it for two weeks and failed miserably. At the time I didn’t have enough knowledge and resources to make the switch. It was a pity thought, because the idea of eating a raw vegan diet truly resonated with me.
It wasn’t until three months ago that I started becoming a fruitarian. The first time I heard about the fruitarian diet I thought it was a joke. How could someone live eating only fruits? I began to tell my friends and family that I was going to become a fruitarian, just to make fun of the idea. Much to my surprise, those jokes became reality.
My Goals as a Fruitarian Bodybuilder
Now days my goal is to establish myself as a solid fruitarian. I plan on eating mostly fruits and supplementing my diet with some raw vegetables, seeds and nuts. I have done pretty well over the past three months but the last few weeks have been quite challenging due to the drop in temperatures.
Luckily, I am on my way to Hawaii, where the climate is warm and fruit is abundant. I will be living there for six weeks (or more) in a community filled with fellow raw vegans who follow Douglas Graham’s 80 10 10 diet.
During this trip I plan to become a strict raw vegan and eat as much fruit as possible. I also plan on exercising and working out every day. I want to prove to the world that it is possible to gain muscle while becoming a fruitarian. I believe that by developing an impressive physique I will be able to prove that.
As I become a fruitarian bodybuilder I don’t expect to look the same way as traditional bodybuilders who train three times a day and flood their system with supplements and steroids. My focus is still on health and wellness. Fruitarian bodybuilding is simply a pass-time and a project that I plan to take on for the next few months. The pictures bellow compare my body 10 years ago (no steroids) vs. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s body (with steroids). I aim to achieve the best of both worlds.
Why Prove the Fruitarian Diet?
I have been asking myself this question over the past few weeks. Why is it that I need to prove that we can gain muscle with a fruitarian diet? Why is fruitarianism such an important concept for me?
The truth is that I am not quite sure, but in my heart I feel that this is something I need to do. Part of it is because I believe that the fruitarian diet is the best diet for humans, animals, plants and the environment.
I have learned that humans and frugivores by nature (Return to the Brain of Eden) and that fruit is the only food that is given “free of karma” (Mango Wodzak’s Destination Eden). I also learned that fruits are the best foods for detoxification (Dr. Robert Morse’s The Miracle Detox Sourcebook) and that a simply grape fast may cure people from any disease (The Grape Cure).
Moreover, I recognize that fruit is the food that yields the most calories per acre and that fruit trees are the best food source we can create; given that they not only provide food for humans but also oxygen and a natural habit for other animals.
Fruit, Love and the Pursuit of Happiness
Even though I recognize that fruit is the best food for humans, I also recognize that each person is unique and free of choosing their own path.
Many people will disagree with the fruitarian diet, stating that it is dangerous and risky. Most people will also disagree with veganism. They swear that humans need animal products to survive. To me, this is a marketing scheme and a bunch of lies that have been fed to us since before we were born in order to profit from the abuse, torture and exploitation of innocent animals.
That being said, I still respect people who eat animal products. In fact, my parents eat animal products every day and I have learned to cope with that. I often join them at the dinner table, despite the discomfort I feel when I see dead corpses on their plates.
I know in my heart of hearts that the fruitarian diet is the right diet for all humans. However, I try not to preach this as so because I know we are all in different places on our evolution. I also know that reality is set by the observer and that, while I live in a world where Fruit is King, others may live in a different reality. I don’t intend to convert everyone to fruitarianism. I only wish to explore, educate and show others what is possible with a fruitarian diet.
The Benefits of the Fruitarian Diet
Over the past three months I have learned about all the benefits of the fruitarian diet and I am sure there are many more to discover. Weight loss has been an obvious result which defies statements from doctors and nutritionist who say that too much fruit makes you fat. Mental clarity and feelings of lightness are quite obvious as well.
The fruitarian diet has also helped me overcome several addictions, including porn, alcohol and marijuana. It has helped my sleeping patterns, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up early in the morning. It has also improved my confidence, performance and productivity, making it possible for me to quit my day job and embark on this adventure to Hawaii. =D
There are many more benefits to becoming a fruitarian and you can learn all about them by reading my fruitarian diet blog which was recently awarded the 26th place on the list of the top 100 diet blogs on the internet.
