This is the morning of November 1st, my first day at the Kanekiki farm and raw vegan community in Hawaii. The journey of the Fruitarian Bodybuilder begins.
Arrival to the Kanekiki Farm and Raw Vegan Community
My flight landed last night around 7 p.m. Barb, one of the owners of the farm, and Karen, came to pick me up. It was raining, it was beautiful. The air was warm but not hot, the humidity was mild.
On our way to the farm I drank a smoothie that Karen has bought for me. It has durian in it. I had never tried durian before but I was looking forward to it. It was an experience hard to describe.
We arrived to the farm and the first thing I noticed when I got out of the car was the sky full of stars. BEAUTIFUL. I felt at home.
Almost everyone was already in bed or sleeping. I said hello to half a dozen farmers who were still awake watching a movie in the community room and then headed off to the “Dolphin Hut”. This is where I slept.
My evening was delicious. It rained intermittently throughout the night, sometimes pouring fiercely. All night long the frogs sang to each other, I thought it would bother me to sleep but it didn’t. As a matter of fact, I don’t recall having such a good sleep in a long time. I even walk up throughout the night, but this did not bother me at all.
First Morning at the Kanekiki Farm and Raw Vegan Community
I woke up in the morning without any effort. It was 6:30 a.m. I went to the bathroom, which is located everywhere (at least for number 1s) and then headed off to the community room. I then began to write this article.
Half way through my writing I got invited to do a short session of yoga with a couple of girls who are staying at the Kanekiki farm and raw vegan community. It was short and sweet, no more than 15 minutes long.
My Day so Far
Following our yoga class I had a small conversation with Karen about buying land here in Hawaii. She said there is a property nearby that we will be checking out later today. It is 3 acres big and already has a few greenhouses and a setup for aquaponics. I am very excited about it.
After talking to Karen we went downstairs to join the community morning meeting. I was introduced to the whole crew and listened to the assignment of daily tasks. Other than that, I have spent the rest of the day getting familiar with some of the procedures and rules at the Kanekiki farm and raw vegan community. It is 1 p.m. now, so I will probably write an update before going to bed. So far everything has been lovely…
My Afternoon in the Big Island
… Around 2 p.m. Karen and I got a ride north to visit the aquaponics farm. We walked around the property for half an hour, talked to the owner and asked him lots of questions. We envision what it would be like to build a community there and brainstormed some ideas to manifest our vision.
At the end of our meeting the owner offered to give us a ride back to the main road since we didn’t have a car. We got dropped off at an intersection 10 minutes away from the property. It was pouring rain.
I opened up my umbrella and shared it with Karen. We then began to walk back home, sticking our thumbs out, hoping to catch a lift. Five minutes later an elder with a truck stopped to pick us up, we got into the back, giggling at the experience.
The man took us as far as he could and then dropped us off. After that we got two more rides that brought us home. It was an awesome experience, I look forward to doing it again.
My Evening at the Kanekiki Farm and Raw Vegan Community
We made it back around 5 p.m. with enough time to eat some food and join the evening meeting. It was game night. We played a game where we got in pairs and stared at each other’s eyes from 5 minutes.
After that, we sat on a circle on the floor and I was placed on the “hot seat”. The group then proceeded to ask me lots of random questions and I answered as honestly as possible. I also cracked some jokes which the group seemed to enjoy. =D
During my hot seat I mentioned that one of my favorite things to do is offering massage & bodywork. As soon as the circle ended one of the girls approached me and asked for a Reiki session, I agreed. We both enjoyed it very much. Following that another girl approached me asking for a session as well. Again, it was a lovely experience.
Now I find myself laying on the couch in the community room, finishing up this blog as some of the younger kids from our group watch a cartoon on their computer. I am feeling great, a little tired but excited for tomorrow.
I must admit that other than the short yoga practice from this morning, and the intermittent walking that we did in the afternoon, I did not exercise much. I do feel a little disappointed with myself, as I would had liked to start my training to become a fruitarian bodybuilder. That being said, I feel that I did what had to be done and I am going to bed with zero regrets. I can say with all certainty that it was a great choice to join the kanekiki farm and raw vegan community
See you tomorrow,
