Read “Different Types of Fruitarians“ in my new website:
Give Fruit a Chance
Before we dive deeper, we’ll look at the differences between fruit based diets, fruitarian diets, fruitarians, and fruitarianism. I tried my best to use each of these words properly throughout the book, as they are often incorrectly interchanged with each other, leading to confusion around these subjects.
Over the years, people have come up with their own definition of the fruitarian diet. Dr. T.C. Fry, co-author of “Your Natural Diet”, defined the fruitarian diet as one where at least 50% of the caloric intake comes from fruit. Other authors believed fruitarian diets must include 65% of total calories coming from fruit. There are those who raise that number to 85%, and others who go as high as 95%.
There is also people like Mango Wodzak, author of “Destination Eden”, and “The Eden Fruitarian Guidebook”. Mango’s approach is as strict as it gets. According to him, the only true fruitarian diet is one which includes fruits alone, and excludes everything else. He calls his approach “Eden Fruitarianism”, using the word Eden to distinguish from other less-strict forms of fruitarianism, and refer back to a time when humans lived in absolute bliss. Eden Fruitarianism excludes all animal products, plants, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, plus every type of fungi, algae, and bacteria. It is a 100% fruit-only diet.
The term “fruit based diet” serves as a general umbrella to include all the previously mentioned diets. Fruit based diets include large quantities of fruit, without necessarily setting limits for a specific caloric percentage, or excluding certain foods. In most cases, the terms “raw vegan diet”, and “fruit based diet”, are interchangeable. That is because most fruit based diets are also raw vegan, and most raw vegan diets are high on fruit.
In my case, I follow a raw vegan and fruit based diet that completely minimizes animal products, and focuses on eating mostly raw fruits and vegetables. Few people follow a fruit based diet that includes animal products or cooked foods.
For the purpose of this book, a fruitarian will include anyone who consumes at least 50% of their calories from fruit. That being said, I have my own personal definition of a fruitarian. For me, the word fruitarian is a combination of two words, “fruit” and “arian”. The suffix “arian” refers to “having a belief in a specific thing”. In other words, I consider myself a fruitarian because I believe in fruit. I believe in its beauty, it’s gift, and it’s potential.
Now it’s your time. Give Fruit a Chance.
