The Fruitarian Bodybuilder Struggles to Gain Weight at the Gym
Being 100% honest I can admit that I have been struggling to get the motivation to become a fruitarian bodybuilder. As you may have read on my previews blogs, the gym we have at Kanekki is short of impressive, however, it is pretty convenient and I am grateful for it. I guess it will take me some time to adapt to it and get excited to work out there.
More than the limitations of the gym, the issue I am having is my own limitations. One of this limitations revolved around sweating. I know it may sound lame, but Hawaii is pretty hot and humid and sweating here is a simple task. The gym doesn’t have any windows but it also doesn’t have any air circulation and so far I haven’t gotten to put on any workout clothes before hitting the gym. Instead, I have been exercising in long cargo pants and workout boots. I can certainly see how spoiled I’ve been throughout my life. I am grateful for the opportunity to change and grow out of my comfort zone.
Sweat, Mosquitoes and other Challenges
To clarify things, the issue I have with sweating revolves around the fact that I don’t have a ton of clothes here and I also don’t want to be washing clothes every day. We only have a single washer at Kanekiki for 25 people and we have no drier. This means that I have to hang my clothes outside and with all the rain we have been getting, and the immense humidity in the air, it could take a while before I get some clean clothes back on.
If I had a choice, which I obviously do, I would walk naked all day, but unfortunately the mosquitoes make this impossible. I am still looking for a balance that makes sense. You thought life in paradise was easy. Think again =P
My First Fruitarian Workout
I kept the workout short and easy. I don’t want to go too hard too fast. I decided to keep my gym sessions down to 30 minutes or so, partially because I don’t want to spend a whole hour in there and also because there isn’t much equipment to do much more than that.
Today’s workout consisted of a simple circuit. I started with body-weight squats (10 reps), then moved on to the bench press adding 100 pounds (8 reps), then I did some pull-ups which is one of my week points (4 to 6 reps). I topped that with some simple triceps extensions with 10 pound plates (10 reps on each side), some simple bicep curls with 20 pound dumbbells (10 reps each side) and finished with front deltoid raises with 10 pound plates (10 reps each side).
I am planning on repeating this same sequence every day for the first week. We only have one set of dumbbells which are 20 pounds and a couple of barbells, one long and thick, the other short and thin. Other than that we have a handful of plates, a pull up bar and a couple of gymnastic rings which I am sure I could get creative with. There is also a dirty yoga mat that has been on the floor since the beginning of time. This is what I am working with to become the fruitarian bodybuilder.
Fruitarian Weight Gain
At this pace it would seem unlikely that I could see any fruitarian weight gain in the coming weeks, however, I am keeping my mind open and my spirits high. If I take into consideration everything I have learned about bodybuilding in the past decade I would say that I need to do longer workouts and eat way more food than I am eating right now. I know that would surely help and at the same time I think I can still see results with my (perhaps mediocre) approach.
Like I said before, at this time I don’t feel like doing workouts that are longer than 30 minutes and I am still in the process of figuring out how to buy, store and eat fruit. The temperatures here are much higher than in Boulder and there are all sorts of animals that munch on my fruit. Needless to say, it has been hard to follow my fruitarian diet plan for weight gain.
A Lousy Fruitarian Meal Plan Balanced with Inspiration
I also don’t have a car and I have no idea where the closest market is or how to get there. This means that I simply can’t buy a bunch of produce and “carb the fuck up” like another fruitarian bodybuilder recommends. We have to work with what we have and honor the process we are going through, regardless of how lame, pathetic and disappointment it may seem.
On the bright side, I have been receiving a lot of support from the community. Barb, the co-owner of Kanekiki, told me that I can base my internship around the fruitarian bodybuilder project. She even said that she knows a man who was a full on fruitarian bodybuilder and even wrote a book! I am super curious to find out more about this mystery bodybuilder and gather as much information as I can, meeting him would be optimal and I am pretty sure that could be a possibility.
Plan B, my Fruitarian Book
Another option is to switch my focus and write a short book about fruitarianism instead. It would be a text that summarizes everything I have learned so far about the fruitarian diet and everything I am learning during my stay at Kanekiki in Hawaii.
The fruitarian book would definitely be easier, all I would need to do is sit and type, which obviously comes easy for me. Becoming a fruitarian bodybuilder is much more of a challenge and proving to be way harder than I expected. This is why I rather focus on fruitarian weight gain and bodybuilding. I think this will be more rewarding in the end.
I can always write a book, no matter where I am. I can also continue to strive to become a fruitarian bodybuilder even if I fail in Hawaii and need to come back to Boulder. Either way is fine, but I came here with the goal to become a fruitarian bodybuilder and I will stick to it until I am sure I can’t. If others have done it, the less I can do is try. As long as I have a little faith in me I can continue to strive forward and make progress. Considering all things I don’t think I am doing so badly.
