Today was an eventful day at the Kanekiki Farm. I hope I can remember everything that happened. The day started at 6 a.m. and we were practicing yoga with Jake by 6:15 a.m. At 7:30 we had our morning meeting and I got paired up with Destiny to harvest the back of the Kanekiki Farm. We got a wheel barrel, a ladder and our gloves to collect oranges, bananas and a handful of other fruits.
Killing Plants for My Fruitarian Diet
I spent most of the time clearing cane grass, weeds and nitrogen fixing trees to make space for airflow and sunlight to access the fruit trees. While I did this Destiny took care of harvesting the fruit.
I still feel that cutting down the plants we don’t need is one of my favorite jobs. Maybe because it is the simplest job, or the one that requires the least amount of thinking, maybe it is because it helps me feel very productive. Curiously enough, it involved killing plants, which I am trying to get away from by eating only fruits with a fruitarian diet.
Permaculture Talks with Bill at the Kanekiki Farm
For breakfast I had papayas. Todays is my fifth day on the papaya fast. I was concerned that I wouldn’t have enough papayas for the end of the week. Luckily I found a box with my name that had 30 papayas inside. That should be enough to carry my papaya fast until the end of the week. I only have two more days left.
After breakfast I sat down with Bill to ask him some questions about tomatoes. The conversation evolved into a half an hour talk involving the topics of permaculture and growing a fruit forests in Hawaii. It was a very interesting conversation.
Bill has a lot to teach and I have a lot to learn. We are a perfect match on that department. I was very grateful for Bill’s time and his way of teaching. He is easy for me to listen to and I appreciate his teaching style.
We talked about a few projects I could work on my free time. This includes planting more fruit trees around the rainbow hut. We also talked about building a small greenhouse to grow tomatoes and cucumbers. I also asked him about starting an herb garden by the rainbow hut.
I am in an interesting position now, since a big part of me would like to stay at the Kanekiki Farm for a very long time, while the other part of me wonders if I will be leaving soon and how long I will continue to practice a raw vegan diet. Fruitarianism is fun and eating raw seems to be the healthiest choice but it is hard to know how long I will be able to sustain it. Only time will tell.
Towards the end of our conversation Bill recommended a few books for me to read on the subjects of permaculture and sustainable farming. These are some of them:
Playing the Ukulele with Cockroaches
After talking to Bill I sat on the grass with Jake and ate some papayas in the sun. I was planning on working out after but instead I went upstairs to the Kanekiki community room and played the ukulele with Kim. I felt some guilt because I knew I only had so much time and energy on the day. I thought I had to honor my commitment to my fruitarian bodybuilding project. However, playing the ukulele felt like more fun and that is what I decided to do. No regrets.
This was my first time playing the ukulele in my whole life and I am proud to say that it is not as hard as I imagined. That being said, I have a long way till I can consider myself “good”. The fact that the ukulele has only four strings makes it easier to remember the chords. That being said, some of the hand positions are as hard as they are in the guitar. I still need to learn the basics, like how to hold the ukulele so it doesn’t fall of my hands. I hope I continue to practice and get better soon.
After my ukulele fun time I went downstairs to eat more papayas. I have been trying to eat as many as I can to find out what my maximum is. I am still stuck at 20 per day which sounds good but is not enough. This only adds up to 1,200 to 1,500 calories at most which doesn’t sound like enough to become a fruitarian bodybuilder. Ideally I would like to eat less food through the day without counting calories but I am still caught up on that way of looking at my fruitarian bodybuilding approach.
One of the funniest moments of the day happened right after eating this last round of papayas. I went back upstairs to play some more ukulele. When I grabbed the instrument I noticed it was making a weird sound, as if it had some dirt inside.
I walked to the balcony and shook the ukulele with the mouth facing down. Suddenly I saw a cockroach fall down, hit the ground and walk away. I was amazed! I continued to shake the ukulele and another cockroach fell down, hit the floor and walked away. This time I laughed, as hard as I can. I screamed “Kim, Kim! Come see this!” She came to the balcony with a skeptic face and witnessed THREE MORE COCKROACHES fall from the ukulele, hit the grown and walk away. It was hilarious, remember, a few minutes ago I was playing with that instrument…
Speak-Easy and Inspiring Movie at the Kanekiki Farm
At 6 p.m. we gathered for the Speak-Easy meetings I have been facilitating since I arrived to the Kanekiki Farm five weeks ago. We had six people join us and we kept the meeting shorter than before. We played some of the same games we have been playing plus a few new games we never played before.
One of the new games is called “The Kings/Queen’s Chair”. In this game, someone volunteers to sit on a “throne” and the rest of the group has an open conversation about what that person would be like as a ruler. Then the person sitting on the throne shares his/her point of viewWe had a lot of fun and created space for some interesting conversations.
After that we had more papayas, four or five, I don’t know. Then I headed back upstairs and found half a dozen people sitting in front of the computer ready to watch Life of Pi. I have only seen the movie once. I saw it two years ago when I lived in Santa Barbara, California.
I really wanted to watch the movie so I grabbed a couple of pillows and laid on the floor. The movie was great, it was very inspiring and I learned a lot.
It was interesting to find myself watching the same movie I saw two years ago. Different time, different place, different company. So much has changed, so much I have grown, and somehow, everything feels the same.
Life is wonderful.
