Humans are frugivores. That is why I am writing another article on the frugivore definition and our natural diet.
Frugivore Definition
What is a frugivore? In a nutshell, frugivores are animals that feeds mainly on fruit. However, there is controversy on how much fruit an animal must consume to be considered a frugivore. For example, there are many herbivores and omnivores that eat fruit, but they are not considered frugivores or fruitarians. On the other hand, there are many primates, bats and birds that feed mainly on fruit and for this reason they are considered true frugivores.
Humans are an interesting specimen and the great majority of people struggle to see that humans are frugivores because so many humans eat all sorts of things that are not fruit. In other words, it is impossible for most people to realize that humans are anatomical, biological and physiological frugivores because we are so used to seeing people eat animal products, grains, nuts, seeds and vegetables from childhood to death. That misbehavior and misconception does not take away that fact that humans are frugivores.
Why are Humans Frugivores?
How do we conclude that humans are frugivores when we see so many of us eating animal products, grains and so on… Well, the answer is simple, we do it by studying nature and studying science…. Let’s find out the truth, are humans frugivores?

By looking at all the similarities and differences presented in the frugivore chart, it is easy to see that humans are frugivores by nature. The Frugivore Diet
A frugivore diet is going to look much like a fruitarian diet. If we look at frugivorous animals like bats, chimps and birds we will discover that different species in different habitats favor different types and quantities of fruit. Some may eat a frugivore diet consisting of only fruits, others may include shoots and leaves.
Humans, as mentioned before, are able to eat like an omnivore and survive for many years, however, we are still frugivores by nature. This is why our “frugivore diet” may contain all sorts of things, from fruits only, to spirulina, animal products or the most recently re-discovered “super food”. At the end of the day, humans are frugivores and fruit is what we should eat.
