Note, I have updated my fruitarian definition since I wrote this blog post. I now believe that a TRUE fruitarian can only consume fruits and nothing else. Still I believe it is fair to call someone a fruitarian if they consume a fruit-based diet with at least 50% of the calories coming from fruit. I find this to be ok since T. C. Fry, one of the first promoters of the fruitarian diet, used this definition in his book “Your Natural Diet“
The fruitarian definition that we use on this site is different than all others so far. The fruitarian bodybuilder defines a fruitarian as anyone who consumes at least 51% of their calories from fruit. This tends to include most raw vegans, some vegans and a few people who consume animal products.
We decided to make this our fruitarian definition because we wanted to be as inclusive as possible. The truth is that true, 100% fruitarians are very rare and hard to find. The few that I have come across at Dr. Robert Morse, author of The Detox Miracle Sourcebook and Mango Wodzak, author of Destination Eden: Fruitarianism Explained. Other strict fruitarians include Michael Arnstein and Anne Osborne. Out of these four, I believe Mango Wodzak and Anne Osborne are the only ones who still eat fruits and nothing else and they have been doing it for many years.
Fruitarian Definition, the 51% Rule
We chose the 51% rule because all the other rules where just as subjective. Some people say that the fruitarian diet is defined as a diet that includes 80% fruits, other people say it is 65% and others vote for 100%. The truth is that there is no truth. This is the reason why Mango Wodzak calls his 100% fruit diet “Eden Fruitarianism”. This is a sure way that his fruitarian definition won’t be confused with other’s fruitarian definition.
Most people in the United States are still getting most of their calories from animal products and processed foods. A huge amount of people eat at fast food chains on a daily basis, sometimes even twice a day!
I believe that any amount of fruit added to a diet will be beneficial. The more the better, but we can’t all make it to 100% fruit.
As far as I am concerned, if you eat 51% fruit or more most of your days then you are a fruitarian. Actually, you are a fruitarian anyways regardless of what you eat, but whether you want to follow your natural instincts or not is up to you.
I hope you enjoyed this explanation of our fruitarian definition.
Wishing you well,
