Even though the fruitarian diet is safe, there may be some fruitarian diet dangers worth talking about. Aside from some species of primates, there are no animals in this world who are said to survive on fruit alone.
There are multiple individuals who claim to have survived, and thrived on a fruitarian diet. They swear it is a healthy and safe approach to nutrition. Some of the most well-known individuals include Dr. Robert Morse, author of The Miracle Detox Sourcebook and Mango Wodzak, author of Destination Eden. There are also some less known people who have lived on a fruitarian diet for many years. These include ultra-runner Michael Arnstein, Anne Osborne and Ted Carr.
There are also a handful of fruitarian diet books that have been written to explain why humans are design to eat fruit and nothing else. These, in addition to the already mentioned, include Return to The Brain of Eden, The Eden Fruitarian Guidebook and Fruitarians are The Future.
Aside from Dr. Robert Morse’s clinical trials, there has been very little research done on the effects of the fruitarian diet. This approach to nutrition it is still in its infancy and its potential history among humans is more than ancient.
During the past two months I have been experimenting with the fruitarian diet. I have been recording my experiences on the Fruitarian Bodybuilder YouTube channel and have written many articles on the topic. Some of my recommended readings in favor of the fruitarian diet include: You are a Frugivore, Is it OK to Eat Vegetables?, Stop Killing Your Food and Top 10 Benefits of the Fruitarian Diet.
If you are interested in reading more about my journey into the fruitarian diet I also recommend you read From Carnivore to Fruitarian. You will learn from all these sources that there are many reasons and potential benefits to start a fruitarian diet. There are also some potential dangers, which I have outlined below:
Fruitarian Diet Danger #1: Detox Symptoms (The Healing Crisis)
The fruitarian diet is said to be hone of the most detoxifying diets one can take on. Assuming the toxic nature of animal products and cooked foods, it is possible to clean up your entire system using a fruitarian diet. Dr. Robert Morse has been practicing and recommending fruitarianism for more than 42 years and has used this diet to treat more than 150,000 patients in a clinical setting. He swears by it and countless testimonials from his clients serve as strong support and evidence.
Any detox diet has its adverse effects, Dr. Morse calls this stage of the process a “healing crisis”. This period may include all sorts of symptoms. For me, this experience has included an unbearable itchy rash on my whole lower body. Other people have experienced diverse detox symptoms including insomnia, vomiting, irritability, constipation, fatigue and colds.
All these detox symptoms are meant to sway away as long as one continues to stick to the fruitarian diet without consuming more toxins. These symptoms could be considered a good thing since they are potential signs that the body is getting rid of unwanted congestion. On the other hand, these could also be mistaken as detox symptoms when they are in fact actual issues that need to be address. The answer varies from case to case and points of view on this are infinite. This is why I do my own experiments.
Fruitarian Diet Danger #2: Sudden Weight Loss (Too Skinny Too Fast)
Some people may think that sudden weight loss is a good thing. However, there are many complications that can come with this and there are dangerous factors that need to be addressed. Sudden weight loss releases massive amounts of toxins that have been entrapped inside fatty pockets and releases them into your lymphatic system. When the amount of toxins that your body releases is more than your lymphatic system can process you may experience adverse detox symptoms or other health complications. For people who are overweight or obese, sudden weight loss can have some very dangerous effects such as major movement of the channels that connect the kidneys to the bladder.
This is why it is important to transition slowly to a fruitarian diet. Unless recommended otherwise by a doctor or a professional like Robert Morse, those who are still eating meat products should take their time making their way to a 100% fruitarian diet. The transition that I recommend goes from being a carnivore/omnivore to eating a vegetarian diet for a few months, then moving to a vegan diet and doing that for some time, then cutting all cooked food to become a raw vegan, and then slowly cut down on the vegetables, nuts and seeds, until all that remains is fruit. From there you can move on to a fruitarian juice diet which I do not recommend for long term use, but can be quite useful during a detox (See: The Detox Mono Diet and The Grape Cure).
Fruitarian Diet Danger #3: Muscle Loss and Protein Deficiency
Along with weight loss may come muscle loss. The fruitarian diet removes the major parts of our daily intake of fat and protein which may lead to fairly quick muscle loss. This debate is still up for grabs. I personally do not believe that a fruitarian diet necessarily leads to muscle loss or protein deficiency. According to my research, we do not need as much protein as we are told. The main reason for this is that our body does not actually use protein to build muscle, it actually uses amino acids, which are then put together to create protein to build the muscle. I will explain…
Most people think that it is protein (such as meat protein or vegetable protein), that builds muscle. In fact, all protein that is ingested has to first be broken down into amino acids so that it can be absorbed by the body. Once this basic structures are absorbed, the body connects them to create long chain amino acids, also known as proteins. Fruit does not contain any protein but instead contains raw, simple form amino acids which are readily available for digestion and absorption without the need of extra energy or metabolic processes. According to my theory and understanding, if you consume enough calories from fruit, you will be taking in enough amino acids to build protein for muscle growth.
That being said, I could be totally wrong which would mean that a lack of protein intake would lead to muscle loss regardless of how much fruit you consume.
Even if I am right there is an additional factor that needs to be taken in consideration which is that switching to a fruitarian diet comes with its own set of detox symptoms and adverse reactions. If these include fatigue or insomnia it will very likely decrease the amount of time and energy you have available for bodybuilding and training which may lead to partial muscle loss. I spent the first month on my fruitarian diet training very hard and during that period I was able to loose body weight while keeping my muscle size. After that, my detox symptoms increased and I had to reduce my time weight lifting and bodybuilding, which has led to some muscle loss which has not been as large as one would expect it to be.
Fruitarian Diet Danger #4: Diabetes, Pancreatic, Teeth and Pregnancy
There are a number of additional risk and dnagers that come with the fruitarian diet. This is a relatively new diet for our modern society and the results that come with it have not been subject to meticulous research.
There are some risks that are more certain than others. For example, it is very likely that a fruitarian diet will create social dissonance. Almost no one in our society is a fruitarian, we are very hard to find. Strict fruitarians are some of the rarest creatures in this world. People tend to be afraid of what they do not know or do not understand. If you are the only fruitarian in your community, it is likely that you will endure some social challenges because of this.
There are other risks which are perhaps less likely. These are issues which are debated on both sides, with fruitarians on one side and –anti-fruitarians in the other. Those who do not believe in the validity of the fruitarian diet think that too much fruit will damage teeth and set people up for high risks of diabetes, pancreatic cancer protein deficiency, pregnancy risks and so on. So far I have not experienced any of these symptoms through my fruitarian diet but it may be too soon to judge.
Fruitarian Diet Danger #5: Moving to Hawaii Or another Tropical Region
This may be a risk or a blessing but once you understand the benefits of the fruitarian diet it will be hard for you not to think about moving to the tropics.
Needless to say, fruit quality, quantity and availability is substantially better in the tropics. Places like Hawaii and Thailand are known for the quality of their fruit. These places contain multiple communities of fruitarians and raw vegans who are either born there, or relocate in order to live a fruit based lifestyle.
For some people moving to Hawaii may be a lifetime dream. For others, it may be a destabilizing desire that can bring about a number of problems. Some people have jobs and families which cannot be relocated. This can cause a number of problems for an individual or house hold.
For me, moving to Hawaii is a dream coming true. It does entail some amount of risk as I am leaving my house and job in search for an unknown experience in a far off island in the middle of the ocean. However, I have faith and believe that I am bound for a wonderful experience.
That was my list of the top 5 fruitarian diet dangers. Do you know of any others? Leave them in the comments bellow. 🙂
